About Montessori

Derived from a social advocacy movement for children, Montessori is method of education. In the early 1900s, Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first Children's House in Rome, Italy. Through observation and study, Dr. Montessori determined the best methods of learning and stated, "I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori method."  Early Education Montessori and Child Care Center promotes Dr. Montessori's philosophy that education is an aid to real life.

Principles of Montessori

Student. Learning is self-directed. Each child should be able to grow and develop at his or her own pace. Education should draw from the natural development of the child.

Teacher. The teacher respects each child's unique potential. In early development, the teacher guides learning by active instruction and demonstration. As the child develops self-confidence and inner discipline, the teacher intervenes less but continues to offer guidance and support. The teacher facilitates learning that is developmentally and age-appropriate.

Environment. The environments are thoughtfully prepared so that optimal learning can occur and that children can freely move around. Montessori materials are developmentally appropriate, engage the senses, and strengthen cognitive skills.
